Learning life skills through swimming is our philosophy at the Swim Fitness Center. Through progress reports, newsletters and our knowledgeable staff, we educate and inform parents as an important part of our teaching team. We believe that aquatic child development extends beyond our swimming pools and into the heart of our families’ homes. In addition to physical swimming skills, our students learn emotional skills such as:
- Listening to and following directions
- Social interaction and teamwork
- Respect for oneself and others
- Overcoming obstacles and facing fears
Learning to swim is hard work, albeit fun, and requires much effort. How much a child enjoys this work and how rapidly s/he progresses depends greatly on the attitude of the parent(s). It is not only rewarding, but also contagious when children master goals in the swimming pool (and in life!). By working as a team with our parents and swimmers, our staff takes great pride in guiding children through the peaks and valleys of swim class.
Class sizes are limited to four children per instructor to provide a more personalized experience. Skills (from easiest to hardest) are taught progressively, roughly following the schedule outlined here:
- For new students or graduates from our Parent-Child classes: basic safety and learning skills such as following directions, safely waiting for their turn, making “Balloon Faces” and not crying.
- Swimming six feet in a horizontal body position, using paddling hands and an underwater Balloon Face.
- Completing five “Up-Faces” in a horizontal swimming position, climbing out on the wall and sit-jumps.
- Five Up-Faces, back swims, rollovers, and back float in good horizontal position.
- Ability to swim without goggles, swim 16 feet underwater, tread water, get rings from the four-and-a-half-foot depth, and swim 38 feet of Up-Faces.
- Swimming excellent freestyle, backstroke, “Wiggle–Butts” and sculling on the back in horizontal position.
- Swimming elementary backstroke, sidestroke, 76 feet of freestyle, and 38 feet underwater.
- Mastery each of the following strokes: (1) freestyle, using bi-lateral breathing, (2) backstroke with a racing start, (3) Breaststroke and (4) Butterfly.
